One Degree off the equator, 22 new products Ron and I took some time off work to attend Canon's much anticipated product launch held at One Degree 15 @ Marina Club @ Sentosa, Singapore this afternoon. Canon launched a total of 22 new products at this event, and Andrew Koh, Director and General Manager, Consumer Imaging & Information Division of Canon Singapore was present to introduce all the 22 new products to us, as well as a series of new initiatives that Canon is setting up to support the photography communities across the globe.

As mentioned in the previous page, Canon will be launching a series of initiatives, one of those is the EOS "Playtime" microsite for amateur photographers to showcase their works and interact with one another. Canon will also be holding a series of "EOS Academy" workshops with schools and other fraternities to teach people on the correct techniques of photography. The EOS 40D is Canon's mid range DSLR flagship. Poised to replace the EOS 30D, the 40D waas launched earlier this month at COMEX 07, with various enhancements like the DiGiC III sensor, 10.1 MP CMOS Sensor, 6.5fps burst mode, Shutter Speed of 1/8000, a 3 inch LCD and a Live View Mode.
The EOS 1Ds MK III is Canon's highest end professional full frame DSLR camera. First seen live at the Canon's launch event, the 1Ds MK III is the successor to the 1Ds MK II. Improvements incorporated by Canon into the 1Ds MK III includes an upgraded 21MP full frame sensor, dual DIGIC III, ISO6400, 5fps burst and a 300,000 shutter release cycle count. Like the EOS 40D, the 1Ds MK III also features a 3" LCD and Live View capability.
The EOS 1Ds Mk III coupled up with a 70-200 IS USM f2.8 L lense. Secondary LCD Powershot SX 100 IS & G9 Not willing to splurge on a DSLR? No worries at all, Canon launched the Powershot G9 from the prosumer series. A new SX series was introduced as well, the Powershot SX 100 IS series with up to 10X Optical Zoom.
The Powershot SX100, as mentioned, is able to optically zoom up to 10X, with various consumer features such as Multiple Face Detection and various Creative Modes.
The Canon Powershot G9 is the highly anticipated sucessor of the G7 series. We saw an evolution in the Powershot G series of Cameras when Canon launched the G7 about a year back, with a reduction in size and retractable lens. At the same time, Canon also decided to remove the RAW Image recording function in the G7 that has present in the G series all this while. With the introduction of the G9 and essentially skipping the G8, Canon decided to reintroduce RAW Image Recording as well as an upgraded 12.1MP CCD Sensor with a similar form factor as the G7. Enthusiasts who found the Powershot G7 a disappointment finally have a chance to reliven the Canon Spirit!
Ixus 860 & 960 IS, Powershot A720 IS, A650 IS Moving to the consumer-class cameras, Canon introduced a total of 4 new models; the Ixus 960 IS, 860 IS, Powershot A720 IS and A650 IS. IS (Image Stabilizer) functionality has been proven to be an essential feature that consumers look out for when purchasing their cameras, and it seems that Canon has decided to incorporate this feature into all their new cameras!
The Powershot A series is Canon's answer to the budget-concious consumer. The A720 features a 12.1MP Sensor as well as a 2.5" Vari-angle LCD that allows you to tilt to an angle that you desire.
The A650 comes with a 8.0MP Sensor, 6x Optical Zoom and a high ISO of 1600.
The Ixus 860IS comes equipped with a 28mm wide angle lense, 8.0MP CCD Sensor with up to 2.8X Optical Zoom.
The Ixus 960 IS comes with a 12.1MP CCD Sensor and 3.7x Optical Zoom. High Def Digital Camcorders - HR10 & HG10 It is apparent that DV Tapes will become a thing of the past soon, with so many new High Definition (HD) enabled Camcorders being introduced into the market at an accelerated rate. Canon launched the HR 10 and HG 10 Digital Camcorders at the event, with both camcorders being able to record at the full HD resolutions of 1080P. At the same time, Canon will also be launching a whole new HD Film Festival Contest to replace their yearly DV Film Festival that they used to hold.
The HR 10 Digital Camcorder utilizes conventional 8cm DVDs for recording, and is able to record up to 108minutes of HD content when using a DVD-R Dual Layer (DL) Disc. At 530g, the HR 10 is one of the lightest HD capable Camcorder available in the market today. The HR 10 & HG 10 are both able to reach frame rates of 25fps on PAL and 24fps on NTSC mode.
Canon HR 10 Digital Camcorder
The HG-10 Digital Camcorder is equipped with a 40GB 1.8" HDD that allows you to record up to 5.5 hours of high-definition footages or 12 hours of standard definition video. Utilizing H.264 codec, the video footages are sufficiently compressed without taking a hit on the video quality.
Canon HG 10 Digital Camcorder Business AIO - Pixma MX700, MX308 & MX318 Cameras and Camcorders aside, Canon also rolled out a total of 8 All-in-One (AIO) machines (Pictbridge enabled of course!) catering to Business, SOHO and Home users. In this page, we have the 3 models that's built to cater to business users, the Pixma MX700, MX308 and MX318.
Canon Pixma MX700 First on the list, we have the Pixma MX700 inkjet AIO machine, offering a maximum print resolution of 4800x1200 dpi and flatbed scanning of up to 2400x4800dpi. Printing and scanning speeds are excellent at 30ppm for B & W documents and 20ppm for colour documents. A 4R borderless photo takes just 46 seconds to print on the MX700. At the same time, the MX700 also features ethernet connectivity, a fast 30 page Auto Document Feeder (ADF) and business card scanning recognition functions.
Canon Pixma MX308 The MX308 and 318 features a similar print resolution to the MX700 at 4800x1200 dpi, with print speeds of up to 22ppm and 17ppm respectively. The Pixma MX308 offers flatbed scanning at 600x1200dpi, wheras the MX310 is able to scan up to 1200x2400dpi. Just like the MX700, both MX308 and MX318 features business card scanning recognition functions and a 30 sheet ADF.
Canon Pixma MX318 Consumer AIO - Pixma MP970, MP610, MP520, MP476 & MP228 Next, let's touch on the AIO machines for the photographers and consumers, namely the MP970, MP610, MP620, MP476 and MP228.
Canon Pixma MP970 The Pixma MP970 MFC is a new premium model which comes with advanced functions and a 7-colour system which enables it to deliver perfect photo with prints and excellent details and smooth gradations for brilliantly natural colours. With a maximum print resolution of 9600x2400dpi, the printer caters successfully to the needs of photo enthusiasts yearning for a good home photo lab. At the same time, the MP970 can also print at an amazing speed of up to 30ppm and 22ppm for color b&w and color respectively. Scanning Resolution stands at 4800x9600 dpi. Film photographers will appreciate the film scanning functions of the MP970, with the ability to scan up to six consecutive frames of 35mm negatives or positives, or up to four mounted slides, at the same time.
Canon Pixma MP610
Canon Pixma MP520 The Pixma MP610 and MP520 are targetted at the SOHO or home user who require a full featured AIO machine, with the ability to print 4" by 6" photos at speeds of 21 and 46 seconds respectively. The MP610 also offers a maximum print resolution of 9600dpi and the MP520, 4800dpi. Both models are equipped with high-resolution TFT screens for preview and menu functions.
Canon Pixma MP476 The Pixma228 and 476 AIOs can print a 4" by 6" borderless photo at approximately 46 seconds, with document print speeds of up to 22ppm for monochrome anr 17ppm for color. The MP476 comes equipped with a 1.8" color LCD display and is able to scan at 2400dpi whilst the MP228 features a 2 Line LCD Screen and scans at 1200dpi.
Canon Pixma MP228 Inkjet Printers and Scanners - Pixma iP3500, iP4500, LiDE 90 & Canoscan 8800F Last but not least, Canon also introduced two models of conventional scanners and printers each.
Canon Pixma iP 3500 The Pixma iP3500 and 4500 are able to print 4R photos at 47 and 21 seconds respectively, with resolutions of up to 9600dpi for the iP4500 and 4800 for the iP3500.

Canon LiDE 90 The Canon LiDE 90 is a compact office scanner that is able to scan at 4800dpi. It takes a mere 13 seconds to scan a 300dpi A4 sized document!
Canon Canoscan 8800F The Canoscan 8800F is catered for the business users, with scanning resolution of up to 9600dpi, and a 300dpi A4 sized document scans at 7 seconds. |
